Household Appliances Certification
The purpose of the regulation established by the Inmetro Ordinance / MDIC nº 148, of 03/28/2022, is the adequacy of the household appliances and similar, imported or manufactured in the country, to minimum safety requirements.
Inmetro Ordinance 148/2022 is based on International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards for household appliances and aims to increase the safety of the user of these appliances.
The certification requirement will increase safety because, in order to receive the conformity identification seal, the devices will undergo laboratory tests and the manufacturers will have the production line audited periodically. Currently, there are 30 laboratories in Brazil authorized to perform the evaluation according to the criteria determined by Inmetro, but the tests can also be performed by laboratories abroad, provided that they are accredited by the General Accreditation Coordination (Cgcre) or by a Accreditation body signatory to the Interamerican Accreditation Cooperation - IAAC, of the European Cooperation for Accreditation - EA or International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation - ILAC.
The new regulations have expanded the list of compulsorily certified household appliances and leave out those that are part of the Brazilian Labeling Program (PBE), because they are already evaluated within the energy efficiency assessment program, including safety aspects.
A certification process, within the rules of Inmetro, can take between three and six months to complete. The exact time will depend on the complexity of the product and / or a possible suitability to be implemented to comply with applicable standards and regulations. For this reason, it is extremely important that all involved begin the process of attending to the new regulation of Inmetro immediately.
